Chemical oxidation

Chemical oxidation

Chemical oxidation comprises the oxidation of a substance, the objective being to ‘crack’ or ‘break’ it to form another substance or substances. This technology is used for substances that are practically impossible to remove from water without oxidation. The residual products formed by the oxidation can then be treated by absorption, biological degradation, sedimentation or membrane filtration. oxidatie
Oxidants (chemicals) which can be used for this purpose are ozone, hydrogen peroxide and potassium permanganate. These oxidising agents can be used to break down various components, including the following:
  • organic components such as oils and fats, phenols, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAK), etc. (Treatment with an oxidant is not sufficient to fully break down chlorinated hydrocarbons.);
  • inorganic components such as cyanide, sulphide, nitrite, ammonium, chromium and metal complexes.
