During a period of hydrochloric acid shortage, a chemical company turned to Logisticon Water Treatment for a solution. A shortage of hydrochloric acid has major consequences, because without the acid the company cannot carry out regenerations of its classic demineralized water installation (cation - CO2 tower - anion - mixed bed). No regenerations leads to a lack of demineralized water, which is used as boiler feed water, potentially causing a production stop. The potential business damage of a production stop is unacceptable, which is why Logisticon was asked about the possibilities of a reverse osmosis (RO) installation as a pre-treatment of the demineralized water installation.
An RO installation can remove the majority of salts from the water, which can enormously extend the runtime of the resins in the classic demineralized water installation. This means that fewer regenerations are required, and hydrochloric acid consumption significantly decreases.
Fortunately, the market scarcity of hydrochloric acid did not continue to the same extent and therefore rapid intervention was not necessary. The chemical company did feel the need to test an RO installation on location. This made it possible to map out the reduction in hydrochloric acid consumption with reverse osmosis as pre-treatment. This way they were able to gain important experience with RO technology. As a result, the company wants to apply this technology in the future.
For this pilot, Logisticon supplied an RO installation in a container, with a production capacity of 50 m3/h. In addition, the container contained all necessary dosing systems. The installation can be monitored and operated via a secure web portal. This remote monitoring and control functionality allowes the Logisticon service team to provide remote operational support and secure its operation.
