inDENSE®: Improved sludge settleability and phosphate removal for minimal CAPEX
inDENSE®: Improved sludge settleability and phosphate removal for minimal CAPEX
Problem

The Terneuzen sewage treatment plant was faced with the need to improve sludge settleability to increase treatment capacity. Without improvement, a substantial investment in an additional post-settling tank would be required to handle the increasing hydraulic load. In addition, the plant needed to continue to operate without interrupting the treatment process.

Solution

Logisticon has realized the first inDENSE® installation in the Netherlands in Terneuzen, in collaboration with Sweco. The inDENSE® technology uses cyclones for sludge selection, continuously selecting the heavier sludge fraction to improve the settleability of the sludge. This technology was integrated into the existing sludge line without interrupting the process. The return sludge is picked up from an existing sludge pit and pumped to the cyclones, after which the thick fraction (the more settleable sludge) returns to the treatment plant, and the thin fraction (the less easily settleable sludge) leaves the treatment plant via the sludge line.

The implementation of inDENSE® has enabled a significant increase in purification capacity, without the need for an additional settling tank. Initial results are promising, and long-term monitoring will show how the cyclones perform over different seasons. Thanks to the low CAPEX, this solution offers a cost-effective way to improve the capacity and efficiency of the treatment.
